Gluten free travel tips
As Part of my 3rd Year marketing class I have been assigned to create a blog on something that interests me. So I have chosen to base mine on Gluten Free Travel!
Travelling is one of life’s greatest joys, but for those of us who must follow a gluten free diet it can feel quite daunting. I have always loved to travel and explore new places. Before my coeliac diagnosis in December 2023, I didn’t have to think twice about what I was eating or had to plan any of my meals in advance. After my diagnosis I decided to ensure this didn’t hold me back from doing the things I love, I just had to adapt and embrace it as there is nothing, I can do to change it.
One of the most important things to do when travelling if you are gluten free is to plan. This can feel like a bit of a burden as it takes away from spontaneity however it does help to lower stress when away.
I like to start with researching the place I would like to visit and their awareness of coeliac disease. Then next thing I like to do is check the find me GF app and see the options available in that country, I then like to take note of my findings and store them in my notes app.I especially like to find fully dedicated GF locations as this helps to put my mind at ease regarding cross contamination issues! This app is also useful when you are in the location you are visiting as you can put a search in to find the closest restaurants to you.
When looking at places to stay I personally prefer staying in self-catering as this gives me the option to make my own food, so I know how it’s being prepared. It is also a good way to save money as well!
Another useful preparation is if you are going to a country that doesn’t speak your native language then it can be useful to learn key phrases in their language to avoid misunderstandings. If you are worried about speaking the language, then another option is to carry a language card which you can show to your server when dining out to explain your dietary requirement!
When travelling with dietary requirements you should be able to enjoy new foods without compromising your health or comfort, discovering local flavours that cater to your needs while still indulging in the rich culinary experiences each destination has to offer.
